On 9th of May 2024, the Northern Snooker Centre on Kirkstall Road in Leeds became the arena for the much-anticipated annual, The Lodge of Dawn Pool Tournament. In a change to last year’s format, this year’s event was imbued with a special significance as The Lodge of Dawn faced off against their esteemed Mother Lodge, Loyalty Lodge, in a friendly, yet fiercely competitive, showdown.
The air was charged with anticipation, excitement and camaraderie as 26 brethren and guests from both lodges convened, stepping away from the formalities of ritual to engage in a spirited contest of skill and strategy. The Lodge of Dawn was represented by 12 members, while Loyalty Lodge brought forward 14 participants, making up six formidable teams of doubles on each side, plus one extra for Loyalty. Together, they vied for the prestigious trophy.
As the games unfolded, the level of play was nothing short of ‘extraordinary’, and in some cases in it’s broadest sense. After a marathon of 42 matches, the margin was razor-thin, with only a single point between the two lodges.
The excitement reached its zenith as the top two doubles teams prepared for the grand finale. Representing Loyalty Jonathan Bush and Rodney Cundle pitted against The Lodge of Dawn’s own representatives, David, the son of Brother Bernard Nelson, and Jake, the son of Brother Daren Rosenbloom (see pic below). The tension was palpable as the final match commenced.
In the midst of the competition, the spirit of generosity was also in full swing with a raffle draw that saw three lucky brethren winning wine, gin and fresh eggs.
The climax of the evening was a spectacular final game that crowned David and Jake as the champions, amidst cheers and applause. Ultimately, it was The Lodge of Dawn that emerged victorious, basking in the glory of triumph.
The event was not only a testament to the bonds of friendship and brotherhood but also a successful charitable endeavor. A total of £229 was raised through the raffle and entry fees, all of which will be donated to worthy causes.
It was indeed a night to remember, filled with joy, laughter and the true essence of Masonic fellowship.
