Inaugural Lodge of Dawn Pool Tournament

On Tuesday 20th April 2023 the inaugural annual Lodge of Dawn Pool tournament took place the the Northern Snooker Centre on Kirkstall Road in Leeds.

Inspired by the Lodge of Fidelity Pool tournament, Bro Sam Fryer, joint winner of that tournament had spent months planning the event, even commissioning an exclusive trophy to be presented to the winners.

One of the great points about Freemasonry is that, at it’s simplest, it offers the opportunity for members to expand their circle of friends. And Tuesday night was one of those occasions where Freemasonry is simply a social activity – no ritual, no formality, just enjoyment. 14 members of The Lodge of Dawn, plus two masonic guests and two ‘normal’ guests were divided into nine teams of pairs, with each team playing one game only against each other, leading to high stakes and high tension….

Only a well earned break for food could reduce the tension as potential game-winning black balls were missed, white balls inadvertently dropped into pockets amid groans & moans and the wins & losses tallies racked up.

After 36 nail-biting games only four semi-finalists remained with a mix of Lodge of Dawn members, guests and masonic guests (see picture below) before the two sudden death games took place.

But before the final could take place the charity raffle was drawn with Bro. Sam Fryer (eggs), Bro. Carlos Reed (vodka) and Bro. Richard Shenderry (gin) walking away with the prizes, although doubts were raised over Bro. Shenderry picking his own ticket out of the hat !!

And so to the final. The teams of Bro. Sam Fryer & W Bro. Stephen Patterson, from Stability Lodge, took on W. Bro Simon Fellerman & Bro. Adam Chrimes. After a hard-fought match Sam & Stephen ran out worthy winners. Congratulations.

A wonderful fun night was had by all, and £140 was raised for charity from the raffle and contributions from entry fees. Please see the gallery below of photos from the night.

Freemasonry isn’t only about ritual and charity; it’s also about social activities and this along with many others, is part of why people join the Freemasons. You don’t even have to be a Freemason to join in our dinners, walks and other activities.
