Whilst joining a Freemasons Lodge has historically been through invitation, as with everything else, this has moved online. There is more and more (perhaps too much) information online about Freemasonry, and whilst some masonic secrets should stay exactly that, the process of how to join a Freemasons Lodge has become more widely known. For those that want to find out more, the internet is the obvious place to start.
However, it is fascinating to take a look at how people search for this information online. As with most search engine trends, search terms, or as they are known ‘keyword phrases’, are becoming longer and longer, and more specific. Whilst a simple search for just the word ‘Freemasons’ might be used by a large number of people, what they are specifically looking for is not clear. A search for the term ‘Freemasons’ might be a enquiry about people who were Freemasons, general information about Freemasonry or someone looking for basic information about the craft.
So how do people search online when looking to join the masons? Take a moment to think; what phrase or term might you yourself use if you were looking to start your masonic journey?
Having researched this, it is interesting to note, although when you think about it, it is not surprising, that many online searches have a geographic nature to them, once you get past the obvious questions like ‘how to join the masons’ and ‘what is Freemasonry‘. People are quite obviously looking for proximity, with an eye on once they have joined where will the meetings be held. It is also probably a feature of modern search habits as we are getting used to searching for a range of products and services ‘…near me…’.
With this in mind, the most frequently used relevant search phrase is ‘masonic lodge near me’ which is twice as frequently used as ‘Freemason lodge near me’ or the plural ‘Freemasons lodge near me’. It is interesting to notice that the adjective ‘masonic’ is used more than the noun ‘Freemason’ when people search. I’m not sure why this might be……. As you drill further down the list of search phrases, longer phrases are used but less frequently, for example ‘Freemason masonic lodge near me’ and ‘local Freemason lodge near me’.
As a Leeds Freemasons Lodge it is also interesting to note that our fair city is used specifically much less frequently than the general ‘near me’ search term. Thus search phrases like ‘Leeds Freemason Lodges’, ‘masonic lodge Leeds’, ‘Freemasons Leeds’, ‘Leeds Freemason lodges’ and ‘masonic lodge Leeds’ come bottom of the pile when it comes to the number of times these phrases are used.
